Storytelling isn’t just an art – it can also be a system.

In a profession like financial services, built on trust, the right story can move someone from hesitation to action. But in some cases it’s knowing how to tell a story is the hard part.

Here’s a simple framework you can use to craft stories that connect with your clients and prospects:

1. The Set-Up (The Situation)

Start with a relatable scenario. It could be a challenge, a hope, or a big goal that someone had.
I’ll use a simple example used by a financial advisor: “A few years ago, a client came to me overwhelmed by the idea of retiring early. They had saved diligently but weren’t sure if they were ‘doing it right.’”

2. The Struggle (The Problem)

What obstacle stood in the way? What emotions were involved? Make the problem real and human.
Example: “They felt stressed, confused by all the conflicting advice online, and worried about making a costly mistake.”

3. The Shift (The Solution)

What was the turning point? This is where your guidance comes in – not as the hero, but as the guide.
Example: “Through careful planning, we mapped out their spending needs, optimized their investment strategy, and factored in health care and inflation.”

4. The Success (The Outcome)

Show the transformation. What changed? How did they feel afterward?
Example: “Today, they’re living their dream – traveling during the winters and volunteering locally when they’re home – with confidence and clarity around their financial future.”

This framework works because it taps into emotion, it showcases your value without “selling,” and it gives clients a clear vision of what’s possible. And, you don’t have to memorize stories word-for-word. Instead, keep a few ready using this simple flow: Situation, Problem, Solution, Success.

Use them in meetings, on your website, in emails – anywhere you want to make a lasting impression. Because facts inform – but stories transform.
